Skyrim Inspired Skeleton Key 2 Crochet Pattern

Difficulty: Easy

Description:

A simple easy pattern that can be worked up really quick and is beginner friendly. 

The best color choices for keys are usually going to be grays or charcoal. You could do black for cast iron, gold, brass, tan, or different browns. It can be made out of any size yarn or thread, as long as you use a similar size hook to match your yarn weight you should be okay. 

If using threads or if you don't want it to be flexible you can starch it. 

Sc3, ch1 around the ring is designed to bring about an implied texture reminiscent of the inner cut outs on one of the Skyrim key assets. If you want to define more of the diamond shape, I suggest bending and stiffening it into shape or using a matching floral or craft wire to crochet around. The ch1 sections in the ring should allow for some flexibility to help define the shape more.

This can be an accessory on a backpack or a purse, something you hang in your car, a Christmas tree ornament, a play pretend toy for a doll or child, a cosplay prop, an applique, or whatever you want. Have fun!

Instructions:

Ch12, sl st into ring.

sc3, ch1, 4 times around the ring. (16 total sts)

Note: If you get lost, last ch1 of prior section added to ch13 in next makes ch14 total.

Ch13, sl st into second chain from hook, sl st across chain, sl st into first sc. Do not ch1, turn.

Note: short use of flo is for texture.

Push to the front of the hook before sl st into next st, sl st into flo of next 7 previous sl sts. 

5 sl sts should be left.

sc, picot, sl st in next 3 sts, in last stitch sc, picot, sl st into same base st as sc, sl st into first st of base foundation chain. 

Bind off, weave in tails.

Here's another one I made but I crocheted around wire to make the ring portion pop more into that diamond shape I was looking for. (This one is also blocked better and crocheted with better tension. Seems that stiffer yarns are better for these type of projects.)

    Fan art inspired by the video game Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This key is made to look like one of the video games assets.
    The best color choices for keys are usually going to be grays or charcoal. You could do black for cast iron, gold, brass, tan, or different browns. It can be made out of any size yarn or thread, as long as you use a similar size hook to match your yarn weight you should be okay. 
    
    If using threads or if you don't want it to be flexible you can starch it. You will need to know how to make the following stitches: chains, slip stitches, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet and picot.
    
    This can be an accessory on a backpack, a purse, something you hang in your car, a Christmas tree ornament, a play pretend toy, or cosplay prop, whatever you want. Have fun!

Row 2: 5sc, 3dc in next st, sc in last 5 stitches, do not ch1 but turn. (13 sts total)

Row 3: sl st into last sc of previous row, then sl st 6 times. (For a total of 7 sl sts.) ch16, hdc in second stitch from hook. Hdc into each chain stitch, sl st into next two stitches at base of key. Do not chain one but turn. (23 sts total)

 

 

(Note: Final row, back down key stem, up the tip then around the other side, and back to the base of the key.)

Row 4: sl st in prior sl st, then sl st into next 12 hdc stitches, ch4, sl st into 4th st from chain creating a slightly longer picot stitch, sl st into last 3 stitches, ch4, sl st in second ch from hook, sl st into next 2 ch stitches (creates a slight F shape,) sl st into side of hdc stitch or tip of key, ch1, then sl st into each foundation chain of hdc (top side of key), then sl st the last 7 sc stitches in the base of key (row 3), bind off.

 

Weave in ends.

Skyrim Dark Brotherhood "We Know" Tapestry Crochet Chart

    

    I've been batting around on whether or not to share the chart that I used to make this tapestry. I think I'm just worried about stepping on IP (Trademarks and Copyrights) and I realize when it comes to fan art there are grey areas like cosplay, but obviously we aren't selling it so... And it's pretty freaking niche. Like psycho niche. I saw the views to likes on DeviantArt. Like 15 likes to 1K views, speak volumes as to how niche this is.

    Disclaimer: This is not a pattern, it is not a finished product, it's only a chart. It assumes that you already know how to crochet, know how to color change using tapestry or intarsia. I used both methods when making mine, and I had to be vary strategic in how I did it so I didn't have floating yarn on the back. I highly suggest really thinking out how you plan your carrying or dropping of yarns for a super clean back. I made my own stitch fiddle chart and it took a lot of tweaking. Apparently, you can't just slap graphics in. I learned this the hard way. It took a lot of tweaking in order for the phrase to show up well and without issues. A lot of development and testing went into making this chart usable. It is only tested for single crochet stitches. (See zip file .txt for more notes.)

   It took me about 80 hours and I threw my neck and back out. Hahaha...

Future Plans Update

    So I have been having issues getting ready to release a new original pattern. It started with trying to deal with scanning and printing. I scanned my hand draft in for inking, and everything went well, until print testing. My goal was to make my patterns A4 which is international standard, and available in US Letter. But as things got going, the more I troubleshoot, updating drivers, etc... All while working on the written instructions for other patterns. Google somehow corrupted a ton of files, images aren't showing up in pattern tutorials, etc.

    I genuinely have no clue what has happened. I will be fixing this all asap, maybe it's good it's happening now, when people aren't really following me or reading, since we're in our infancy here... I had hinged on Google being my best bet. Free storage, safe for everyone. I don't really trust places like dropbox. I've had issues downloading from places like that. Viruses and the like. I liked Google services because it scans things as you download them. For me, it was peace of mind that when others downloaded my files they would feel safe, secure, and it would build trust.

    With all that said above. I will probably only be using my google drive to host my images in combination with Deviantart, and my written tutorials once finalized, will be stored as multiple copies on my pc, in doc and pdf forms, and posted to my blog. My blog will be the main source for my tutorials from now on. Pdf and written backups will be for me incase something goes down on the blog for whatever reason. (I have hardly any tech skills... I really am trying but I just can't keep up.)

    With the state of the internet and tech, a lot of things have become unreliable and it has been super frustrating for me. I just want to share my creations and spread a bit of joy, connect with people and other artists. I don't know if this is because of dead internet theory or whatever, or big tech greed? But I'm trying to find a way around the broken system, buck AI and stand out as a human creator and stand out amongst AI slop and slop content in general. I don't want to follow trends and make short form content, or 30 second annoying scroll by content to be consumed and forgotten. I want to create something lasting and with value.

    2026 is proving to be difficult so far, but I'm not going to let it deter me. This is going to be my main platform. I am not in business. I'm just a hobbyist for the foreseeable future. I tend to use Ko-fi and Patreon for cross posting purposes only. I'm going to be mostly active here or DeviantArt.

    IF things change in the future for the better, (I'd like to improve my life and my means eventually,) like for example: paid patterns, they might be placed on Patreon and linked here. I'm still trying to get a rhythm and routine. Still trying to find what is going to work best for my hobbyist sharing.

    I'm not going to lie. I'm exhausted. It's a lot of work pattern developing and notes taking, doing the instructions writing, photography, file hosting on google with backups, sharing or cross posting. And even if this isn't exactly considered social media, it's a media outlet for me to share stuff on and it's difficult doing the writing and proof reading with my disabilities at play. It's difficult trying to balance all of this by myself, and stay on top of my personal life. And with the recent headaches. I believe I need to really slow down and pace myself. I need to approach things differently. So you might see me start integrating my blog into the how-to tutorial and pattern downloads will be hosted on DeviantArt.

Thought I'd Share Something About Art Blocks and Creating

     I've been recently working on some crochet patterns. Mostly inspired by my lack of Christmas ornaments, and need for change... Last year I promised myself instead of doing stuff during December last minute, I was going to slowly work on things for next year over the course of this year. That has led me to start experimenting with some of the ideas that I had. And as each idea got generated more ideas started forming, generating more and more, snowballing momentum. Now I have a whole freaking list piled up...

    That said, with how art blocks work for me personally. Unfortunately, I don't have what I understand as traditional art blocks— You know the kind where "I don't know what I want to do," and have no ideas, or have no inspiration kind of thing. (Writing can be difficult for me sometimes. I have ADHD and dyslexia, and can have a hard time expressing myself properly.)  My problem is my art blocks stem from shutdowns from trauma and/or depression. Currently and thankfully, I'm in the opposite of an art block. I am still running full steam crunching through my list of ideas. As I crunch through that list I end up with more idea generation landing on that list. It's like a constant ever flowing wellspring of ideas. Some people would view this as a boon. I kind of view it as a curse, because I have like tons of notebooks all over my room with art ideas that I'll probably never ever get to. For me that is a curse because I will probably never live long enough, or have the funds, or opportunities to see all of those come to fruition. Bummer.

    Just a tip if you want to overcome art blocks, the kind where you feel like you have no ideas, the best way that I found to overcome those, is to keep a mini notebook. Like one of those small one's from the dollar store and a pen on hand always. Write your ideas down as they come to you asap and be fastidious about this. You'll see how quickly these stack up. Best part, it's actually evidence against not having ideas. It'll give you confidence and disprove the lack of creativity or idea generation. 

    I feel the problem for most people isn't that they don't have any ideas. It's that they actually have tons of them but they aren't completely consciously bringing them forward, and a lot of the time they're passively thinking. This keeps it staying more subconscious. They forget that they have ideas because they have an idea pop into their head, and then move on to say, to the laundry because they're doing a chore or prioritizing other things. We are easily distracted and because we prioritize other things above even our thoughts at times, what ends up inevitably happening is your thoughts evaporate like dreams in the morning. 

    Writing things down only takes a few seconds of your time, maybe a minute or two. But most of us waste so much time scrolling online, checking texts, or sitting around doing nothing thinking we have no time, or thinking we're being productive when we are not. In reality we waste a lot of time. As have I. So this is kind of like planting seeds. If you plant your seeds and you water them they grow into plants. So if you write your ideas down in a notebook, yes while they sit there, you can come back to them later or they will often generate more ideas. After all, not everything needs to be done, and not everything needs to be done right away!

    As someone with ADHD I really hate checklists, but they also help, and...I also lost them a lot and have to rewrite them. Haha...

    

    So for me having notebooks lying around has been best because it keeps everything localized. If I really need a checklist. I try to clipboard it. But ultimately everything is in a notebook. If you really want to, and you probably should, you should date your idea lists. Because it gives you a frame of reference time wise. You can see how long you've gone without writing, and even how much time has lapsed since you started something or how much you've finished. It's a great way to set goals and see real improvement and results. It's something to measure. 

    Now as for art blocks stemming from mental health, life burnout, etc... I'm still trying to figure that out. From what I can tell for now, is discipline builds momentum and motivation. Motivation comes from discipline. That's a matter of building or breaking habits. And sometimes, well...rest is important to, and no one should pressure themselves to be constantly on it. This chasing the algorithmic dragon has caused a lot of folks to break. It's not worth it. I tried it on IG. I burned out trying to consistently post, and even hurt my hands and wrists drawing. I caused nerved damage, and had to take a long hiatus as a result. 

    All in all, I guess what we should all be striving for is balance.
